GFCI Protection

GFCI Protection

Are you familiar with that little button on the outlets in your bathroom or kitchen? Has it ever popped out on you when you had a blow dryer plugged in along it a curling iron and maybe one of two more electrical items plugged in? Did you know what to do? Have you ever dropped something into water while it was plugged into an outlet in your kitchen and it again popped the little button out? If so, then the GFCI was doing what it is supposed to do. A GFCI or ground fault circuit interrupt is there for your protection. It is the first line of defense when using an electrical appliance in a potentially hazardous location in your home. It really doesn't matter if you live in a concrete house or a wood house; the potential for electrocution is still dangerous because the conductivity of the house material is not relevant when it comes to electrical outlets in precast concrete or pre-fabricated houses. GFCI's can actually be used at a precast concrete manufacturer for the very same reason they are used in a home.

GFCI Protection

The GFCI device is an electrical wiring device that disconnects the circuit when it detects a difference in the current and it is no longer balanced. It can detect a difference of as little as four to six mille-amps or mA. What is life saving about these is that often the difference in the current is because the leakage is through the body of a person who is grounded. When that happens, the circuit can be shut off in a thirtieth of a second. If a person accidentally touches the energized part of a circuit and there is not a GFCI in the line, that shock could be lethal. Depending on where you are in the world, there are different names for the same device. In some parts of the world they are referred to as residual current devices (RCD), or residual current circuit breakers (RCCB). In the United States and Canada they are GFCI's or GFI, ground fault interrupter. Sometimes they are referred to as an ALCI or appliance leakage current interrupter.

In industrial settings the GFCI's can be used in utility structures and other areas. They serve the same purpose as a GFCI in any setting and are probably responsible for saving the lives of countless people around the world. Electricity is very Powerful and must be respected. Even when the utmost care is taken however, accidents can still happen and if GFCI's are in place, some of those accidents won't be lethal. That is not to say you should ever let down your guard around electricity because there are cases when even a GFCI can't help you.

Home Security - Three Worst Obstacles Of The Home Burglar

Home Security - Three Worst Obstacles Of The Home Burglar

Home burglary is as popular as ever. As a matter of fact it is one of the few areas of crime that has steadily shown an increase in the last couple of years. Many people think that is because of the economy. When the economy is bad people start doing desperate things, and home burglary is a crime of desperation for many.

Home Security - Three Worst Obstacles Of The Home Burglar

Home Security - Three Worst Obstacles Of The Home Burglar

Home burglary is a low risk crime because homeowners don't pay that much attention to their own home security and home protection. If a burglar gets caught, the penalties are insignificant. So the bad guys think that it is worth the risk to steal things from people's homes to put food on their table or buy drugs.

More people have alarms on their cars than have alarms for their homes. That's pretty bad! Statistics show that one out of every six homes will be burglarized annually. Statistics also show that 90% of all home burglaries happen through unsecured windows and doors.

There are several things that people can do to improve their home security without spending a lot of money. The most obvious thing is to start locking their doors and windows even when they're at home. Homeowners can start or join a neighborhood Watch. They are a very effective tool adding increasing awareness of home security in a neighborhood. It is easy to start and it is free of Charge. Check with your local police department or sheriff's office for assistance in starting one.

There are three things that burglars don't like. They are the three worst obstacles of a home burglar.

The first is TIME. The more time it takes a burglar to get into your house, the less likely he is to continue his pursuit of breaking in. The more time it takes him the greater the chance is that he will get caught. And he doesn't want to get caught.

If he does get in, the second thing that he doesn't like is Noise. If you have a motion activated alarm, when he does get in and it goes off it will scare him away. So, consider getting a motion activated alarm.

The third thing that burglars don't like and the third enemy of a burglar is Light. Lights create shadows which make detection easier. Motion activated spotLights on the outside of the house, motion sensing Lights on the inside of the house or Lights that are on Programmable Random Timers can prevent a burglar from getting in or if he does get in can spook him and scare him away. They turn Lights on at random times.

So time, lights and Noise are the three biggest obstacles of the burglar. You can get home security devices cheaply. They can help you improve your home security and home protection and prevent home burglary. You don't want to become a victim of a home burglary.

There are lots of things that you can do to beef up the security of your home that are free or at low cost. The number one is to start or join a neighborhood Watch program. Secondly reMove shrubs and trees around lower-level doors and windows. And put up a sign in your front yard that warns of a vicious guard dog.

Ask anybody who is an expert in home security and they will tell you that don't one of the most effective deterrents to home burglary is the sound of a barking dog. You don't even need the dog just the barking will do. That's where this barking dog alarm comes in.

It uses radar wave sense technology which allows the alarm to "see" through would cement, glass etc. When an intruder enters a 100 degree triangle of protection it automatically begins barking like an angry dog. With the flip of a switch you can announce visitors with a chime or alarm which makes it ideal for retail store owners.

The sensitivity of the radar is adjustable from 10 to 20 feet. So is the volume adjustable. There is a backup Battery system in case of Power loss.

It works by placing the unit in the direction that you want to protect and using the remote control you can arm or disarm the system.

The barking dog alarm is one of the most effective deterrents to home burglary you can get.

When are you getting one?

New Home Security Technologies

New Home Security Technologies

Technology for home security is constantly evolving. While there are still the traditional methods to include smoke alarms, home security systems, and others, there are also many new things on the market. The new technologies are exciting while giving homeowners better peace of mind.

Fingerprint Door Locks: Today, fingerprint door locks are one of the newest forms of technology, which can be used on front, back, or garage doors. Different from coded devices where a person would enter a special code, the fingerprint door lock actually recognizes a person's unique fingerprint.

This means that anyone in the household, as well as friends, can have the fingerprint encoded and then any time they need to enter the home, they would place the finger onto the door lock, which would read the print and allow access. Anyone without the fingerprint in the system would never be able to get inside the home.

There are many brands for fingerprint door locks but all work off much the same concept. In fact, if the homeowner has remodeling going on in the home or has someone house sitting, the person could be provided with temporary access and then when no longer allowed inside, the fingerprint would be reMoved from the system, easily and quickly.

Electronic Pet Doors: Many homeowners have dogs and cats that could benefit from a pet door but the traditional style also provides access to the interior of the home for intruders. However, with electronic pet doors, the animal would wear a collar with a small device attached, one that would work with the door system to provide easy in and out access. With the electronic pet door, a person or even animal without the attached device would not get in.

Cameras: New technologies for home security are also seen in the form of Miniature cameras, which are Wireless and therefore, can be placed outside or inside as a means of protection. With this system, the homeowner could be on vacation and still have the ability to see goings on at the home from a laptop computer, one that has special software installed. If someone were breaking in, the homeowner would then call 911 and law enforcement would be able to catch the intruder in the act.

Typically, a homeowner will place anywhere from two to six cameras in and outside of the premises. All information received is in real time and live. In addition, the homeowner would be able to view multiple locations around the home and even have the ability to maneuver the cameras in different directions. These cameras are incredible, many designed with both day and nighttime Lighting features. Best of all, the installation for home security cameras, especially the Wireless type, is easy.

Personal Emergency Response: Another technology for home security that people overlook is the personal emergency response system. With this, an elderly person or perhaps someone with a disability that became ill or took a bad fall could call for help when no one else is at home. Obviously, this type of home security allows people to live more independently, which is why this system is growing in popularity specific to the older generation.

Home Security - Tips to Guard Against Break-Ins

Home Security - Tips to Guard Against Break-Ins

One very important component to owning a home is home security. In this economy things are already tough enough for homeowners, so having one less worry that a burglar will break-in, is well worth it. Norwalk, Connecticut based Bargain Network is a website that helps consumers buy homes, provides crime neighborhood statistics, and guides consumers in owning a home. Therefore, Bargain Network has posted some worthwhile tips on preventing home break-ins, burglaries, and other home security problems. Let's take a look.

Home Security - Tips to Guard Against Break-Ins

Better lock it up. The art of getting something for nothing is the credo for any and all thieves, burglars, and rip-off artists. That's why it pays to lock up all windows and doors throughout any home, condo, or apartment. For the most daring thieves and lowlifes out there, robbing a place when people are actually at home presents quite a challenge; it may even provide a thrill or two. Don't let that happen.

Don't blow it. It's no secret that the cleverest thieves are also the most effective ones. Meaning, they've probably already done their homework when they decide which places they feel like robbing. That's why it pays to keep one step ahead of them by ensuring that any outside air conditioning and/or Heating units can't be easily reMoved. To guard against the most brazen and daring thieves, bolt those individual units in place from the inside.

Get a new window on the world. Okay, so we're only talking about basement windows, but most homes (especially older ones) have very old (and easy-to-open) ones. Make plans to install heavy-duty basement windows. Burglars hate homeowners who know how to protect themselves. Think about it - to them, security-conscious tenants and homeowners are just plain bad for business.

Don't walk on broken glass. When Annie Lennox, formerly of the British pop duo the Eurhythmics, released "Walking on Broken Glass" in January 1992, she probably wasn't talking about in-home safety measures, but more about the shattered pieces of a broken heart. Whatever the case may be, replacing in-home glass doors with either fiberglass or metal ones just makes good sense. In fact, it could help prevent undo heartbreak at the hands of an opportunistic intruder.

And of course an article sponsored by Home Security Store would not be complete without urging homeowners to invest in a home alarm system. Not only will this lower your homeowner's insurance, but decrease the odds that your house will be broken into. To take home security even a step further there are surveillance systems that are now offered at a much more inexpensive and economical price than ever before. A surveillance system can work as a deterrent and also help police in catching the thief, leading to the recovery of your stolen goods. If you are responsible enough to buy and own a house, then you should know that home security starts with the owner. Be sure to educate yourself and your family. But perhaps more importantly hold yourself accountable and take action to ensure that your "home sweet home" stays sweet, secure, and safe.

Home Security Trends

Home Security Trends

Due to the rising insecurity in the world today, demand for residential and business security systems is also growing. With demand for these services, many companies are opening up with the aim of providing the same. While most are genuine in their operations, others are in the market just for the money and their services are of questionable character. This has seen a change in the home security trends.

To maintain their client base, the genuine firms are offering more personalized and affordable services. They are offering more modified modes and competitive ranges of service and products respectively. With these, affordable and compatible systems are gaining popularity with homeowners. These systems include burglar alarms, fire alarms, remote video monitoring, video surveillance systems with digital video recording, with most of the known systems offering 24-hour service command.

While the goal of the alarm system is to stop an intruder before they make an attempt, one should not overlook the effectiveness of using other systems together with it. Other home security trends includes handing over the same safety provider from one generation to another. A resident that has been using a particular firm for many years, will automatically leave the services to their next of kin or to the new homeowners.

Other home security trends that are emerging, are the guarantees that firms carry out monthly monitoring to ensure that their customers are comfortable. However, this does not involve any increase of their rates. Most companies offer lifetime warranty and do not demand any extra Charges outside what has been signed for in the contract apart from the replacement of spare parts.

How High to Set a Home Insurance Excess

How High to Set a Home Insurance Excess

Anyone who has shopped around for home insurance recently may have noticed an interesting trend - with the excess (deductible) offered by home insurance providers gradually creeping north.

The excess is the amount that the insured person pays in the event of a claim. So for example, if you had a £100 excess and made a successful claim for £1,000 after an insured event, you would pay the initial £100 with the insurer covering the remaining £900.

Why are excess levels increasing?

According to financial analyst Defaqto, the number of firms with a £100 excess on home insurance policies rose by seven per cent in the last 12 months. Indeed a number of insurers have even increased their standard policy excess to £200. Though some providers offer the opportunity to reduce the standard excess, this is generally only done in return for higher premiums.

There is also a new trend emerging in which insurers impose higher excesses for certain risks - for example, claims relating to the escape of water often require a £250 excess.

There are several reasons why this is occurring. One is that insurers want to limit their exposure and reduce the number of small claims that are made.

Secondly, consumers are now becoming more accepting of higher excesses. The gradual increases have become commonplace and many consumers even overlook the policy excess altogether in a bid to find a cheaper deal.

Why you shouldn't overlook the excess

When buying an insurance policy it's easy to simply look at the price of the policy, but the excess level is crucial too. Finding up to £250 at one time to cover an insured loss could be difficult and wipe out the purpose of cover for many events you are supposed to be insured for.

Remember you don't have to set the excess high to secure a cheap premium. Boosting the security of your home, fitting smoke detectors and paying annually instead of monthly can all help reduce your premiums.

Some Ways In Which To Upgrade Your Home Security System

Some Ways In Which To Upgrade Your Home Security System

When you originally brought the security system that you have on your home you felt pretty secure and was only one of the few who could afford such a system. Unfortunately the problem is that the system you have now has become outdated and will not protect your home in the same way that many of the newer systems can and may be it's time you considered upgrading the system you have?

There have been so many advancements in the home security system that you have decided that you really do not want to be stuck with a system that will not provide you the right sort of protection. I mean if you want you could have keyless entry or a thumb print entry system? In fact today you can set up your home with the latest technological items in security, such as a Wireless system or hidden cameras in the home. For many the crime rates in their area are not getting any better and so having a good security system is a must for many.

One such security gadget which is finding a place in many homes is the Wireless infrared camera, which Watches over the home whether you are inside asleep or away from it say on vacation. The great thing about these types of cameras is that they can be monitored from a laptop computer as there is software available which you download onto your laptop and thus link you into the home Wireless security system you have installed.

If you can afford it why not look at having double layered home window glass installed (which is lined with Plexiglass). A burglar who attempts to gain access to your home by breaking a window will be surprised as they will not be able to get through the Plexiglas layer. Not only will you feel extra secure in your home because of these windows but your home will be practically impenetrable.

A lot of people nowadays have the latest camera systems installed in their homes for use with their security systems as many of them are now completely wireless and can Watch almost any part of the home (both inside and out). These can be set up in any area and will see all areas of the house and garden from almost every conceivable angle possible. They also have the added benefit of you being able to hook them up to your laptop or a computer (so whilst at work you would be able to monitor you house at the same time). Plus you may decide to have motion sensors installed and when these are activated a camera will take a picture of whatever has caused the sensor to be triggered.

All these devices are now part and parcel of the new types of security systems that are available and which far outstrip the types of systems that first became available a few years ago. So why not think about upgrading your system now and just carrying out a search on the internet you will soon find what kinds of upgrades are available to the system you already have. But should you not like the upgrades available, then it may be worthwhile considering a whole new home security system installed instead.

Facts on Home Security Cameras

Facts on Home Security Cameras

Security cameras have been around for a long time, gaining their reputation
and popularity with businesses. As years went by and they became more
affordable people began to use them in their homes. A security camera at
home can be a great way to protect your home and family, keep an eye on the
babysitter, or just monitor things while you are away.

Statistics have shown that the number of robberies that occur in homes are
rising steadily in the past years.

If you are interested in protecting your home with a surveillance system, you
should first grasp the concepts of the technology, what it can and what it
cannot do for your safety.

A home security camera is basically part of an entire home security system.
Surveillance cameras are rarely used as standalone devices.

Normally they are connected to some type of alarm and used in conjunction
with motion sensors. These motion sensors register Movements from the
images transmitted by the camera and could then trigger either an alarm or a
recording of the imagery or both.

The primary purpose of a home security camera is there to alert anyone
visually if an unwanted intruder is within the house. They do not provide a
sufficient level of security if used alone. They always should be used along
with home alarm systems. What good does a camera do if nobody is acting on
the image captured?

Another - often neglected - function of surveillance cameras for homes is that
they have proven to have a deterrent effect of any potential intruders. A
potential intruder will think twice if it is really worth attempting to break into
your house while he is likely to be observed by a camera and the footage
probably recorded.

Most intruders already have a criminal record and their pictures are on file with
the authorities. So any video footage of them will get them into much bigger
trouble that a first-time opportunity burglar. That first-timer however would
never choose a home that seems to have sophisticated security equipment
installed. Remember, if your camera never records any suspicious activity it
still might have saved you without you knowing it - solely due to the deterring
effect a camera has for intruders.

It is quite obvious that cameras that are low-priced could probably do the job
you want it to do for a couple of days or so. However, when the time comes
that this camera is to be used during the night, they are un-helpful.

A good home outdoor security camera must also be effective during the night.
There are actually home outdoor security camera brands that are on the
market and are effective and inexpensive.

Once in a while you will hear comments that the only things cameras will do is
attract criminals. The reasoning behind this can is understandable: If people
spot a security camera they tend to think there must be something valuable if
the owners install a camera. However, the reasoning of a burglar is quite
different. Criminals will weigh the risk against the potential return. While a
camera may hint that there is something valuable to get the risk level for the
intruder is raised substantially by an overt security camera.

Please be aware that the use of video surveillance on unsuspecting
individuals such as house workers or visitors may not be legal in all states or
countries. This is particularly crucial if a security camera installed on your
property partly covers - or could cover a public area - such as the sidewalk in
front of your house. So please be sure to check with your local authorities.

All in all, security cameras are a welcome addition to your overall home
security concept. They provide you with sufficient protection to make you
sleep soundly at night or during the day.
